Before it is lost, I must commit to stone the words passed down, overheard, to be recorded. It cannot be lost the words spoken between Porrair and an Avotoc as equals. These conversations have been lost over time – this I know – as we pass them down purely by memory and speech. For our sake and that of future Avotoc I will record all I can remember.
…then, years after their first encounter the Ontautt returned to Lo with a flash of light, and even in her subdued form radiated immense heat.
This time, I have come to learn.
What can I teach you? she asked.
We seek the same. I wish to know all that can be, and your thoughts find what could and cannot be.
And what is there that could or cannot be that you wish to know of me? She put her second child down to sleep and turned to the Ontautt.
I am seeking my own Avotoc.
The two paused, an unspoken agreement the two of them shared – there were not yet words for what Porrair wanted but yet Lo knew. She thought before speaking again, I know not of creation, but you know this. I must assume you know what you seek, and the Ontautt nodded.
I can work with the High Father on creating my own, you are correct in that is not why I am here. You and I are created for the same purpose – to know. I come asking of the purpose of your brothers and sisters; do they take to their purpose as we do?
Lo thought for several minutes. I was created with a more singular purpose – to solve what was believed to be one problem – and once I fulfilled that purpose I was given a new, broader purpose. Many of my siblings have singular purposes with have unending responsibilities…
…as she had many times before Lo welcomed the Ontautt into her company, recognizing the warmth and energy she radiated before she spoke. Do you come seeking to teach or to learn? Porrair did not respond for some time.
I am unsure. I have a question that we may both learn from the answer, if you have one.
Lo nodded, awaiting the question of the Ontautt.
I have my own Avotoc now. There are three. One for fire, the element and force to drive new discoveries. One for metal, the material necessary to contain and study these discoveries. One for order, to keep the other two organized and on task. How do I know I have enough?
Lo sat and thought for several minutes. They both saw the matter from different perspectives, leading each to believe they saw a different problem. How do you know you have enough, well…
I could not remember Porrair’s question, and the rest of Lo’s response is lost not only to me but those who taught me the words. With great regrets, I chisel so that more is not forgotten.
