“Think and work earnestly and honestly, and you will find the reward,” Lo teaches us. How will we find the reward? Does it come to us, or must we seek it out after thinking and working so? How much is to be done for the reward? Many ask these questions, but this is not the thoughts Lo sought to instill in us.
Remember that Lo teaches us to think deeply, and to be wary of thoughts that come too easily, things that make immediate sense. It is always worth thinking twice. The rewards she speaks of are not material, no. Her rewards are that of the mind, sharpened and ready for the world. Not only must you keep your body in shape, you must keep your mind in just as good if not better form.
The reward of the mind is something we can all earn, or lose for ourselves.
Strength is the virtue we pride ourselves in, not strength for self but strength for others. The strength of an Avotoc is for others. It can be used for the self if you consider that helping others ultimately helps the self either through improving the community. The greatest strength of display for an Avotoc is to directly alleviate another’s burden, then indirectly eliminating or reducing the struggle of another or others by contributing to a public good.
Strength of the body is easily recognizable. However, strength of the mind, or wisdom, is not as easily seen. Avotoc must keep their mind sharp. A wise mind can not only solve the puzzles and challenges of life, but can help strengthen the minds of others. It is the same notion of helping others through physical strength that one may keep the minds of other Avotoc sharp. Only a wise mind may speak in such a way that only other wise minds may figure out, helping others to keep their minds strong.
Not only should an Avotoc pursue the tasks of the family, but should work to keep both their mind and body strong so that they can be at their best. An Avotoc who cannot fulfill their tasks because they are not physically and mentally strong is an added burden to others.
That is as much as Lo said to Lu’Sca, before he came to be what we know. The Avotoc did not heed the wise words of Lo, and he came to be punished by Davoto.
