for Large Chamber Ensemble, Pierrot + 2 Perc | Clarinet | 9′ | 2018
Woodwinds are asked to create “air sound”; this is achieved by breathing through the instrument with a loose embouchure, as if a player was warming up their instrument indicated by text and a circular notehead with a dot. The Flute and Bass Clarinet parts are asked to move between this embouchure and a normal pitch-producing technique repeatedly, indicated by text, arrows, and the same notehead. Strings are also asked to produce a “air sound”. This is created by placing pressure more than one would use to produce a harmonic but less than one would use to create a full pitch. The marked sul tasto is in addition to this technique.
The unstressed articulation ( ‿ ) is used as an opposite to the accent. Instead of playing a note a dynamic or half- dynamic above the current dynamic, notes with this articulation are instead played below the current dynamic. This articulation, when combined with staccato as the last note of a slur (see reh. F–G) asks the player to make an echo of the articulated note. In wind instruments, this is achieved by fingering the articulated note as the air is stopped so that the second note is quick and light. In string instruments the same effect is created by fingering the articulated pitch as the bow is lifted off the string or string vibration is otherwise stopped.
The Flute part requires a flute with a b foot and Piccolo, the Trombone part requires cup mute, the Piano part requires soft mutes for the upper two octaves (light sandbags to go around struts are recommended), and the Violin parts require a heavy mute whether a thick rubber practice mute or a heavy metal mute. Additionally, the percussion instrumentation is four Toms (two high, two low), a mounted Kick Drum, a Snare Drum, and a Ride or Suspended Cymbal that is shared by both parts.

you, oranyone is the musical and emotional successor to notfromme. This piece is not as technically or rhythmically challenging as its predecessor, but you, oranyone asks musicians to find the ‘pocket’ in many of the same ways.
