There is one Tempo marking (Subdued, Quarter =60) for the duration of the piece. The conductor or ensemble should feel at liberty to create ebb and flow in the tempo.

Woodwinds are instructed to “breathe air through instrument”; the technique desired is used when players warm up their instruments, and creates wind or white noise, coloured with a small amount of pitch by fingering for the pitches shown. Pitches are shown with a circle notehead with a dot inside to indicate this technique.

Some strings are marked at rehearsal letter E to “change bow rapidly”. Performers should maintain smooth bowing with irregular durations over the marked held period. Change bow direction inconsistently, immediately resuming held note when changing bows. The desired effect is an unmetered tremolo that changes speed inconsistently. Players should not tremolo at unison speeds.

Any isolated phrases (such as m. 135 in T. Sax or mm. 136-38 in Clarinet) may be transposed down an octave for less experienced players, though such phrases should pop out from the ensemble’s texture by design.
