In Extremis

Soundtrack Saturday: Oct.2

Ypx here—today we’re going to be listening to “Fairy Fountain” from The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

We just missed the NA anniversary of the game yesterday (October 1), and the AU and EU anniversaries come later this month (11 and 19 respectively). Released in 2007 (or ’08 for South Korea) and included in several DS game of the year awards and lists, the game saw the series utilize the DS’s touch screen technology in a series of ways; some were more well received than others.

While the music itself is very close to a note-for-note reproduction of the classic fairy fountain theme, the version from Phantom Hourglass has stuck in my memory for quite some time for its use of tremolo. It’s significantly easier to hear with earbuds or headphones, especially in the game itself rather than gamerips for some reason. However, this upload captures many of the tremolos that most other uploads have missed—you can hear the clearest one in the descending line that has a note at the end of each low harp phrase.
