The name Unee roughly translates to “meat lizard”, which implies that Unee were seen as large sources of food before, or the name came after domestication. There remain some wild Unee scattered across Xiruen-Space, but they are vastly outnumbered by domesticated ones. The ‘wild’ Unee appear to be descended from previously domesticated strains, as they exhibit many docile characteristics. The Xiruen have not kept detailed records of first encounters with the species, so which scenario is correct is unclear. It is also not known if they were so substantial in girth before domestication, even under the assumption that the Xiruen intentionally put weight on for slaughter. On their front claws and tail they have spiked protrusions made from the same material as their teeth.
Biology and Behavior
To bolster their mass in both muscle and fat, domesticated Unee are fed tougher grasses and roots from what few plants grow throughout Xiruen-Space. After their first couple of years, female Unee are capable of reproducing, and produce 2-4 eggs that take 3-4 months to hatch. Wild Unee had previously timed their mating season, but domesticated Unee are comfortable reproducing throughout the year.
It is speculated that before becoming domesticated the Unee preferred lower lying lands where water pools. However, this was not due to a previous large consumption of water, but the availability of more grasses. These areas are where current wild Unee can be found, and can be seen in Pan Arbnhap across more diverse habitats. Both domesticated and wild Unee are kept in ecological check by predators including the Kiindem, Urgai, and Aisanee.
Interaction with Omneuttians
As previously stated, Unee were domesticated over time by the Xiruen. It is unclear whether the species was as docile pre-domestication as the still-wild variants are quite docile. Over time, Xiruen have bred different physiological difference into the Unee as well, selecting specific patterns and colours over time. The remaining colours are blue, green, red, and brown/gold. The remaining patterns have been selected for aesthetic reasons and have eliminated closed loops.
