The name Daekoiz is derived from the discrepancy in size between the pairs of front and hind legs and the awkward gait the creatures have as a result. Despite its appearance, the material their beaks are made from is actually tougher than the rest of their bodies, enabling them to consume lava as it cools, while their beaks are sharp enough to break most bones of mammals. Over the rest of their body are large stone-esque plates that form a modular exoskeleton. Daekoiz also have an interior skeleton, and are cold blooded.

Biology and Behavior

Daekoiz prefer to eat cooling lava, as uncooled magma is too hot and will harm their mouths, and kill them anywhere else on their body. If lava is not present, Daekoiz have been known to roam outside onto the plains surrounding the volcanoes they call home to prey on mammals. They can subsist on bone marrow, though it is their last choice.
Daekoiz are not known to be social creatures, though they often live in relatively close proximity, with a volcano having between five and twenty Daekoiz somewhere inside the rocks. It is not known at the time how they reproduce, or exactly what their lifecycle is. However, it has been recorded that a single Daekoiz can live for at least three hundred years, spending most of the time hibernating within its volcano.

Ecology

As referenced earlier, Daekoiz live inside volcanoes, burrowing into the rock surrounding the main vent. When awake, their exoskeletal plates stand up, letting the body of the creature warm. These plates retract and hold tight to the body when hibernating, keeping the creature warm. It was initially believed that Daekoiz served the ecological role of preserving the sustainability of volcanoes, but there has never been proof of this hypothesis, only unsubstantiated writings found within the The Po.

Interaction with Omneuttians

Early in Poria history, the Daekoiz were believed to be aspects of Porrair, guarding the volcanoes from the threat of potential unsustainable use by the Poria. As Poria are made from the Daekoiz’s preferred food source, the Sentient Species assumed the role of prey for much of its history. In modern times, there is no widely accepted method of ensuring survival when encountering a Daekoiz, and caution is still advised for pori workers around volcanoes.
